Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been using AdBlock Plus for ages (Sorry, Gawker Univision) but, recently, I started getting these annoying Taboola ads on Jalopnik and elsewhere despite ABP. I tried blocking the element, but it just came back. So then I thought I had some sort of virus. No, it turns out that ABP is actually the one letting the Taboola ads through to my browser. It seems odd that a program that was designed to block ads would be pushing them, but I think it has something to do with the pushback from websites who need the ad revenue, along with ABP’s desire to figure out what an acceptable ad might look like. If you’re interested in the whole thing, you can read ABP’s take on it !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It also explains how to block the Taboola ads if you are using ABP.

Look! An empty canvas for McMike to play around with! Wonder how he’d sell every Kinja User site.

ABP actually takes the revenue from the site

Well, I’ve never sent ABP any money, and I’m sure very few others have either. Folks gotta make money somehow.

If you open the ABP options panel, at the bottom there is a check box that says “Allow some unobtrusive advertising” that is on by default. Just uncheck it if you didn’t want to see any ads.

You can enable blocking of those in the options (unobtrusive ads setting).

Personally I want sites I read to make money, but there’s too much crap out there that blocks content, slows down browsing, introduces security flaws, etc. so this seems like a good compromise. Of course it would be better for everyone if sites just didn’t run annoying ads in the first place, instead of paying off a middleman to have ads unblocked.

ABP has been allowing the Taboola ads forever, but they are trying to create a more self service platform for advertisers: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/09/adblock-plus-starts-selling-ads-but-only-acceptable-ones/

uBlock Origin makes quick work of what ABP can’t block.

Opera has built in ad blocking and a built in VPN. I switched over a few weeks ago and it works real well. Some sites don’t play well with the VPN, but most work just fine with it.

I’ve tried every browser that runs on Mac. I used FF for a long time until it became unstable and had a habit of crashing while I was in the middle of writing a long aviation history post. So I went with Safari. I’ve tried Ublock, and left it for some reason. I don’t remember why. Anyway, Taboola is gone and I’m happy.
